ENVIRONMENTAL
COMMUNICATION IN A
TIME OF LATE INDUSTRIALISM

UCSD Fall . 2021

Course Brief:

Discourse about the environment and ecologies mediates our understanding of the natural environment and our relation to it. In this course, we will examine various discursive practices to understand ways that various stakeholders—be they individuals, industries, environmental justice groups, o government agencies—make sense of and shape the conditions of the environment.
We will develop a broad stroke understanding of some key environmental framings such as environmentalism, environmental racism, corporate greening, and environmental justice.  Alongside, we will develop a set of tools through which we can analyze public discourse about the environment. You will then use a combination of what we have learned to make your own intervention into environmental communication.
