CRITICAL DESIGN STUDIO-ADV./ ADAPTIVE SPACES OF CARE
Course Description
In this studio course, we will examine the role of adapting spaces as a critical design practice. We will look at how spaces are adapted to control and delimit, but also to politically configure territories of care now that we’re over a year into the pandemic.
This quarter’s studio will take the city of San Diego as a starting point to develop a catalog of adaptive strategies across the city that constitute networks of care-giving. Alongside, we will examine forms of space-making and place-making at various scales to develop a capacious understanding of territories of care.
For a little over the first 6 weeks students will work on a joint project (split in 2 teams), much like a studio production. We will then use that collaborative work and our collective catalog to develop individual, aspirational interventions while reflecting on their limitations.
